Morehead State University Gains Efficiency and Patient Safety with Syndromic Clinical Protocol Manager

May 31, 2012 - Morehead State University's Caudill Health Clinic is experiencing increases in workflow efficiency and patient safety since implementing Medicat's Syndromic Clinical Protocol Manager (SCPM). Morehead State first began using SCPM five months ago to order and monitor Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) screenings and implement follow-up protocols.

Dr. Shannon Smith-Stephens, DNP, MSN, APRN-BC, Morehead State's Family Nurse Practitioner, estimates this use of SCPM has saved countless time and manual effort since SCPM was launched. "We are using SCPM to automate the process of STD screening and alerting us for follow-ups," said Dr. Smith-Stephens. "Not only is this a huge timesaver for our clinic, but it ensures no patients slip through the cracks, which improves patient safety."

Morehead State has been so pleased with its success Dr. Smith-Stephens said they have expanded the use of SCPM to automate other processes as well, including managing Hep B reminders, PPD reminders, CPR certification expirations, and RN licensure expirations. Once they have these programs running she plans to take them a step further by implementing automated follow ups through SCPM. Additional plans include developing compliance programs for the University's Nursing and Science schools using SCPM paired with Online Student Health and Immunization Compliance Manager. "We not only expect to see further gains in workflow efficiencies from more frequent use of this tool, but anticipate measurable results in driving increased quality of care for our patients," she said.
